The San Juan County Fairgrounds Master Plan, which was last updated in 2012, provides a roadmap for developing and operating the fairgrounds in a manner that is responsive to County residents and focuses on long-term economic sustainability. Beginning in summer 2018, a new planning process is underway to answer several important questions, including:
- What are the existing conditions on the site?
- How should the fairgrounds be improved?
- What are the historical and cultural significance of the fairgrounds to County residents?
- What kinds of new or expanded uses should be considered?
- How should recommended improvements be implemented and funded?
The Master Plan is currently being developed! The draft is scheduled to be posted for public review and comment later this year.
San Juan County residents ages 13-21 were recently invited to take our “Teen Survey”. We received 35 responses to the online survey over the course of approximately three weeks. You can review the results here.
The first Master Plan survey took place from July to early September. Approximately 300 individuals responded to the online survey or completed the tablet survey at a pop-up event. You can review the results here.
Representatives from the planning team were present throughout the Fair in August to collect public input on ideas for the Fairgrounds Master Plan. Dozens of individuals stopped by our booth in the Main Building to share their favorite Fair memories, document the history of the fairgrounds, and express their ideas for new or expanded uses at the fairgrounds. All of the input provided from the Fair and surveys will be used to help develop a list of Master Plan priorities that will be vetted with the Fair staff and Board, the County Council, and the general public. A formal draft of the Master Plan is expected for release later this year.
