Fiber Arts; Class III; "Homespun blended yarn fade set" by L. McEnery; Friday Harbor, WA 98250. "These yarn colors came together accidentally when I noticed that I had 5 different colors of fleece already dyed that might work together.  The darker ones are dyed over gray Suffok/Cheviot fleece (Nancy Larsen/MaryJane Anderson) given to me by Val White, who had kindly already carded it.  The lighter colors are Romney from Angie Shephard.  I processed these from shearing to yarn, which means skirting, washing, drying, dyeing, drying, teasing, carding, blending colors, spinning, and finally plying.  I blended the colors on the drum carder. About 350 yards - maybe it will be a shawl ?"

Fiber Arts; Class III; Homepsun yarn made with natural dyes by L. McEnery; Friday Harbor, WA 98250

Homepsun yarn made with natural dyes

These were processed from shearing to yarn with local fleece. They were dyed in the fleece with naturally occurring dyes. Plants from here: Usnea hirta lichen, English walnut husks, Black Walnut leaves, Rhubarb leaves, Evernia lichen, Phaeolus and Lobster mushrooms. From the rest of the world: Letharia vulpina lichen from Tubb Springs, OR; Pernambuco shavings (South American hardwood). Some have modifiers like iron, some are modified with citric acid or alum to extract more or a different color from the plant. Most colors obtained by boiling the plant, then heating the fleece in the strained liquid. Using plant matter to dye also tends to leave more sediment in the wool. Most of the colors are subtle; a few are not. I have used avocado pits (pinkish tan), walnut leaves (rusty tan), nettle (very light grayish), carrot tops (goldenrod) as well as some other remarkably unsuccessful plant materials. Somehow, all the lovely colors of natural dyeing are already coordinated.

Fiber Arts; Class V; Pigs aplenty by S. Rosenberg; Friday Harbor, WA 98250. "These 4 small knitted piglets are just four of a litter of seven that I’ve created since mid March. All were made from leftover bits of wool sock yarn in my stash. I was given the pattern by a friend in the textile guild, who had in turn been given it by another guild member. My original contribution was the design of the piglets’ curled tails. Besides being a good distraction, creating them is also quite addictive. I’m afraid they have no useful function otherwise, except perhaps to make people smile."
