Eliza Habegger, Artist
The Fair’s 2020 poster artist Eliza Habegger pays playful tribute to vegetable farmers with “2020: A Fair Odyssey.”. Executed in colored pencil and ink, her poster features a farmer astride a tractor, drifting through space surveying his harvest – huge watermelon and tomato planets, and a carrot comet.Surely this space farmer would bring home a few blue ribbons!
Eliza herself suffers from a lifelong gardening addiction. At home on San Juan Island, she grows vegetables, fruits, and berries for family and friends. She is employed by the San Juan County Land Bank where she manages the Salish Seeds Project nursery, producing native wildflower and grass plants and seeds. An occasional artist, she particularly enjoys drawing, linoleum block printing, and watercolor. Her Fair poster incorporates themes from her own daily life, including a favorite hen and her son Noah’s enthusiasm for old tractors.
The Fair is a summer highlight for Eliza’s whole family. She particularly enjoys the Fair’s celebration of traditional rural skills. Her favorite haunts include the poultry barn, fruits and vegetables, the PTO pie booth, the vintage tractors, and the fiber arts building.
